Tension Release Exercise - TRE
TRE are simple exercises that help us relax contracted fight-flight-freeze mode by gently shaking out tension. Living with continually high cortisol levels, the stress hormone, depletes energy and causes all manner of illness. Calming our body down when tense, tight or upset allows our body-mind to rebalance and heal. Our body is amazing at self-healing if we let it.
TRE is great after sports, the gym, strenuous work, upsets, injuries old or new and simply helping us relax and unwind at the end of the day. A few minutes of TRE when nervous before events like exams or public speaking can reduce panic or nervousness so we can function well.
Those with chronic trauma symptoms also benefit by shaking out the uncompleted response to trauma the body is holding until it finds a way to safely release that energy. TRE was originally developed by David Berceli for the resolution of trauma symptoms.

Our natural healthy state is calm with a sense of belonging - safely connected to others, aware of our environment and able to naturally activate fight, flight or freeze when needed then reset to calm when the crisis is over.
Our fight-flight-freeze-unfurl response is an amazingly clever survival system that can safe our life. Usually we flow from ACTIVATION > ACTION or FREEZE > DISCHARGE > CALM. Sometimes our system sticks in ACTION/FREEZE mode flooding us with more adrenalin and cortisol for longer than is healthy. Like the car accelerator getting stuck on high revs. Freeze mode is like having both accelerator on full plus the brake on.
TRE switches on our natural DISCHARGE mechanism of shaking which returns us to calm relaxed mode so we can rest and repair. When we are open, relaxed and safely connected to others our body-mind-spirit is well able to heal itself.
